Mumbai: An 81-year-old man was duped of Rs 7.5 lakh collectively over multiple instances of cyber fraud where the scammers initially posed as representatives of an e-commerce platform, then as bankers and eventually as police. Police have registered a case and are probing further.The senior citizen and his wife live in Goregaon West. They shop for their daily needs on an e-commerce platform. On July 3, the complainant ordered clothes hangers on the e-commerce platform. They were to be delivered on July 6, but no delivery was made. On July 7, the complainant searched online for the customer care number of the platform. Around 2 pm, he received a phone call from someone who claimed to be a representative of the platform. He advised the senior citizen to make some purchases on the platform and cancel them so that his previous order would be delivered soon. He insisted the senior citizen share his phone screen for better assistance.After the complainant did so, a sum of Rs 99,982 was debited from two of his debit cards. He then searched online for the bank’s customer care number. He got another call and this time, the caller claimed to be a bank representative. He asked the senior citizen to share his screen again. The senior citizen trusted him and did so. This time, a sum of Rs 6 lakh was debited from his account. The senior citizen then made a complaint on the Mumbai Police’s 1930 cybercrime helpline.On July 13, he received a phone call from a person who claimed to be a cyber officer from BKC. He asked for “charges” to be paid to investigate the complaint lodged. The senior citizen sent him a sum of Rs 39,960. But he did not receive any reply from the “police” and realised he had been conned a third time.
