21-year-old Mayank Lohar was killed by a co-traveller on a local train over a trivial dispute on keeping the compartment door shut

Mumbai: The family of Mayank Lohar, the 21-year-old who was brutally stabbed to death in a local train by a co-traveller, submitted a plea to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for the case to be fast-tracked and senior lawyer Ajay Misar to be appointed as the special public prosecutor.Mayank’s father, Ramesh Lohar, met Fadnavis and Railway Police Commissioner Rakesh Kalasagar this week with the application. Ramesh demanded that the accused, Roshan Suvarna, be given the capital punishment. Suvarna is presently in judicial custody.“Justice can only be served if the case is fast-tracked and the verdict is given out soon. The chief minister said he was aware of the incident and assured he would look into our demand,” said Ramesh.On June 22 night, Mayank, an employee at a retail clothing outlet, boarded the first-class coach of a Nalasopara-bound fast local from Andheri station to head to his Virar residence. Suvarna boarded the same compartment. As it was raining, the doors to the compartment had been shut. But Suvarna opened one of the doors which resulted in a few passengers getting drenched. After Mayank shut the door, an argument broke out between him and Suvarna.Other commuters came forward in Mayank’s support and some of them manhandled Suvarna. Both the men were sent to different exits. When the train was between Goregaon and Malad stations, Suvarna allegedly took out a 17-inch long knife from his bag and moved towards Mayank. He allegedly stabbed Mayank twice in the chest and abdomen who then lost consciousness. A co-passenger filmed Suvarna as he brandished the knife at others. Suvarna went back to the exit where he had left his bag and hopped off the train at Borivli station before it halted. Other passengers alerted the police and Mayank was moved to a hospital, but he did not survive. Police looked through footage from 400 surveillance cameras before tracking down Suvarna from Panvel and arresting him.
