Mumbai: Powai police have registered a first information report against five candidates who allegedly used their mobile phones to cheat during the peon recruitment examination conducted by Central Sanskrit University at Kendriya Vidyalaya on IIT-Bombay campus on Sunday.Police were questioning the five candidates at the time of going to press. No arrests were made.A total of 324 candidates were scheduled to take the Group D Multi-Tasking Staff recruitment exam across 14 rooms, with 28 invigilators (two per room) assigned to oversee the process at IIT-B’s Powai campus between 9am and 10.30am. Seating arrangements were made for 24 candidates in each room. Jammers were installed in every room to prevent cheating.“Candidates were allowed into the exam centre only after undergoing security checks,” said a police officer.An invigilator from Room No. 69 observed a candidate acting suspiciously and, upon a body search, found a phone, which had been modified to bypass the jammers and communicate with someone outside the campus to share the exam answers, in his trouser pocket. “Similar incidents occurred in Room Nos. 20, 62, 81 and 89 where candidates were also found in possession of modified devices,” said the FIR.Powai police have seized the five phones. “A case has been registered against the five candidates who are reportedly from Haryana,” said a police officer .They have been charged under the relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for common intention, party to a criminal conspiracy, and cheating.
