CM: 500 in Palghar being evacuated; 2 dams overflow

Palghar: CM Devendra Fadnavis said nearly 500 Palghar residents were being shifted to safer locations even as Kelwa and Pelhar dams in the district reached their full storage capacities on Monday. Officials had to release excess water and begin evacuation of residents of downstream villages. Alerts were issued to eight villages near Kelwa dam. Four of them were classified highly vulnerable. These villages comprise around 130 families, of which 65 were shifted to safety. Evacuation of the remaining families was underway, officials said. Reinforcement work was being carried out around the dam. Additional emergency measures will be implemented if the water level or discharge increases, said district collector Indurani Jakhad. An NDRF team was deployed in the area.Pelhar dam supplies 10 million litres per day of water to Vasai-Virar daily. TNN
