Mumbai Railway Police Arrest Man After Viral Train Death Threat Video
Police said the incident created panic and fear among passengers in the compartment

Mumbai: The Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) railway police in Kurla arrested a 36-year-old from Reay Road within 24 hours after a video of him allegedly threatening to kill a fellow passenger during a local train journey went viral on social media on June 29.The incident occurred at around 10:34 pm when the train was passing near Govandi station. Police said the accused, Ramzan Fakir Qureshi alias Ibba, a Govandi resident, was travelling in a heavily intoxicated condition and threatened the life of another passenger over what officials described as a trivial issue.“Taking serious cognisance of a video that went viral on social media, the Mumbai Railway Police immediately investigated and took legal action against the accused. At least 20 closed-circuit television (CCTV) was scanned before tracing Qureshi,” said Kurla LTT railway police senior inspector Jabbar Tamboli.In the FIR, the complainant, Surendra Shukla (55), a resident of Ulwe in Navi Mumbai, said the accused was speaking to someone on his mobile phone while using abusive language in a loud voice and appeared to be heavily intoxicated. “When I requested the accused to refrain from using abusive language because women were travelling in the compartment. He got enraged and suddenly became aggressive, started shouting and threatened to kill me in full public view.Police said the incident created panic and fear among passengers in the compartment. During the altercation, another commuter recorded the entire episode on a mobile phone. The video was later uploaded to social media, where it spread rapidly and drew widespread attention.Tamboli said the highest priority was given to the safety of railway passengers and immediate and strict action was taken against any kind of criminal activity. In the video circulated on social media on June 29, it was observed that a railway passenger was threatened with death during a train journey from Govandi to Chembur. The incident occurred in a CSMT slow local train going in the down direction.Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Qureshi threatened Shukla with death by shouting. Taking serious note of the incident, the Crime Detection Unit of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Railway Police Station under the Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate conducted technical analysis of the video, checked CCTV footage at railway stations and, based on other confidential information, traced the accused.The incident came barely a week after a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death in a local train in the western suburb on June 23.The Mumbai Railway Police Commissionerate appealed to citizens to immediately report any untoward or suspicious incident observed during railway travel to the Railway Police or Helpline 1512.
