SHRC issues notice to BMC over unregistered paramedical staff

Mumbai: State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued a notice to BMC over an unregistered laboratory technician at VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz.Earlier, a similar notice was issued at Bandra Bhabha. Hospital officials said there are many lab technicians within BMC hospitals who hold MSc degrees but still do not have a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), which is required for registration with Maharashtra Paramedical Council.“The technicians are still qualified to do the job, but the issue has happened because the rules changed in 2019,” said a doctor from VN Desai Hospital. In the aftermath of the rule changes, unions protested, arguing that the costs of registering with the council should be borne by the corporation.Furthermore, hospital officials added that there are many technicians whose registration is pending with the council even as the details were submitted to the paramedical council a year or so back due to heavy volumes of applications.
