Kalyan cop assault accused is serving PSI’s son; father refuses to support bail

Kalyan: Fresh details have emerged in the case of assault on an on-duty police constable in Kalyan (West), and it is learnt that the arrested accused, Rahul Tayde (25), is the son of a police sub-inspector currently posted with the Special Branch in Thane and not a retired police officer, as was initially believed.Police sources said Tayde is allegedly addicted to alcohol and has a history of violent behaviour. Sources claimed that he had earlier assaulted his own father, following which the officer distanced himself from his son and has refused to support his bail plea. The assault on the constable took place in the early hours of July 26 in Gauripada after the police control room received a complaint on the 112 emergency helpline about a drunken man creating a disturbance outside a residential building.Police constable Ganesh Chavan of Khadakpada police station, who was on patrol duty, reached the spot to verify the complaint. According to the police, Tayde allegedly turned violent, grabbed the constable by the collar, repeatedly punched him, banged his head against a wall and attacked him with a wooden stick.During the scuffle, the constable’s mobile phone, nameplate and lanyard were damaged. CCTV footage of the assault later surfaced on social media, triggering widespread outrage over the attack on an on-duty police personnel. The police arrested Tayde and booked him under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempt to assault a public servant, obstructing a government servant from discharging official duty, causing damage to government property and other serious offences. Further investigation is underway.
