Mumbai: The gardens department of the BMC’s N ward office is inquiring into massive and improper tree pruning at Ghatkopar society recently, which fully exposed various bird nests, destroying eggs laid in them.Activist Sunish Subramanian Kunju of Plant and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS-MUMBAI), said: “We have formally complained to the BMC about the unscientific and insensitive tree pruning at the Kalpataru Aura society, along LBS road, where several trees were badly cut, thereby exposing bird nests. We have demanded that an FIR be lodged under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.”An official from the gardens department of N Ward office recently visited the society to assess the situation.A local resident, Pradnya Potdar, said: “The improper tree cutting took place from July 7 to 10. I was shocked to find so many bird nests of crows, maynas, and other species exposed to the rains. Hence, we want the civic body to take legal action.” She added that the N ward office had only given permission to prune a few marked trees in a scientific manner. — Vijay Singh
