Mira Road: The family of the 21-year-old Mohammed Mujjamil Khokhar (21), who died after a crane at a construction site fell on him in Mira Road on Thursday, has demanded that the builder be booked along with the contractor, threatening not to perform his last rites.The crane at the JP North project of JP Infra came crashing down inside the residential complex. The crane operator sustained injuries in the incident. Residents of the housing complex have also backed the demand, alleging repeated complaints were ignored.According to police, Khokhar was sitting in the compound of the housing complex, playing a game on his mobile phone, when the crane suddenly collapsed, trapping him underneath. He died on the spot.Following the incident, the victim’s family members and residents staged a sit-in at the Kashigaon police station until around 4 am on Friday, demanding that the builder also be named as an accused. “We will neither accept my son’s body nor perform his last rites until the builder is booked. I will continue my fight until my son gets justice and the real culprits are sent to jail,” the victim’s father, Abdul Khokhar, said.The residents said that the crane had been installed between two residential buildings and that several complaints had been made regarding the potential danger it posed. However, the contractor allegedly ignored the repeated warnings, the society’s secretary said.Kashigaon police said an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered and that legal action against the contractor is being initiated. Preliminary findings suggest that the crane was operational when the operator allegedly lost control, causing it to collapse from the 11th floor. The injured crane operator, who is also a young man, is undergoing treatment.
